Act Like It

Ephesians 5:8

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Live as children of light…”

// THOUGHTS:

.. In context, Paul was encouraging the people in Ephesus to live as children of light.

.. This tells me the importance of living up to what we claim to be.  Just as the Ephesians were exhorted to live as children of light, we also as Christians, ought to live up to what we have been called.  Chap 4:1b tells us “…to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.”  We are, first of all, called to be God’s children – in accordance to His will and desire for us to accept Him as our Lord and Saviour with the willingness and confession of our hearts.  Thus, we ought to live up to that call.  Meaning, our actions must meet up with the standards of what we are called and have called/claimed ourselves to be, believers in Christ.

.. Paul said, “…you were once in darkness…” we were expected to act like ones in the dark.  But now that “[we] are light in the Lord..” we ought to live as children of light.  We are expected to live as children of light – in all goodness, righteousness, and truth (v. 9)

// BELLE:

.. To much is given, much is required.  There are things that the Lord has called me to do – first, as a believer – I ought to act like the light, because I have The Light, being faithful with my call as a believer and everything else should follow through as well; second, as a mother – I ought to fulfill my duties because this is who I am; thirdly, as a daughter and a sister – need to get my duties straight as well; fourth – as a youth minister, teacher, musician – to act according to who I am as well – ought to be an example and a model for who I am teaching; fifth – a friend to many – have to live that up too.

.. Seems like so much.  But when I just appropriately act as a believer in all that I do, everything else will seem menial.  Praise God I have the Light – Jesus Christ.  I really ought to live like one in all that I do, say, think.

// LORD, indeed you have a high call for me as your child.  I pray that You will empower me to reach up to that standard.  Help me to really act as who I am – not becoming a stumbling block to the people around me but rather an encouragement that no one will be hindered from finding You by the way I am.  Help me and give me wisdom when sometimes I do not exactly know what to do.  Thank you Lord for your reminder.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
