"Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your sons and your grandsons.
"Now the Lord was angry with me on your account, and swore that I would not cross the Jordan, and that I would not enter the good land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. For I will die in this land, I shall not cross the Jordan, but you shall cross and take possession of this good land.
So watch yourselves, that you do not forget the covenant of the Lord your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a graven image in the form of anything against which the Lord your God has commanded you. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. (Deuteronomy 4:9, 21-24 NASB)
Wonder what Moses felt knowing that he wouldn't be able to get into the Promised Land because of the Lord's anger... Must've been a horrible feeling. But yet, The Lord knows His ways.
This passage reminds me of when a person is already dying and gave his last goodbyes to the people he's leaving behind. Moses said to 'not forget what your eyes have seen...' And to do so is to 'heed to yourself' and to 'keep your souls diligently' because indeed it is easy to just lose sight of putting God first and allow 'idols' to be put before The Lord.
Practically:
..Remember God's miracles in my life (how He has saved me from my filthy immoral lifestyle and living a co-dependent life with human beings rather than God)
..Remember the good old times with God (hearing Him ever so clearly and the feeling of being sure in knowing His ways)
..Remember the prosperity in fully obeying The Lord (denying myself daily and wholly surrendering to the Lordship of Christ even in most uncomfortable things)
// I need to constantly remind myself of these truths. I need to keep my soul diligently (watching it closely and persevering through hard times in obeying The Lord).
// Lord, I do not know how to go about this without Your Sovereign strength. Only you can really guide me through during these tough times when it is really difficult to 'keep my soul diligently' with all the trials that come my way daily. Please help me to choose you when the trials come my way. Help me to be guided in your truth and to truly respond to what you have led me through. I need you Lord more than ever. In Jesus' name, amen.
