So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees.
Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. (Hebrews 12:12, 15 NLT)
Discipline sure is a very difficult thing when it comes down to the basics of it. Hence v. 12 tells us to 'take a NEW GRIP' because many times our hands are tired and our knees are "weak" to do what we ought to do during the time of discipline. When we are tired and weak, we seldom want to do anything - let alone be disciplined (since that seems to be harder than just normal "chores).
Take a new grip
.. reminds me when I was biking for a while - about 20 miles. You keep holding on to the handle for a while that sometimes you lose grip and get tired of it. Hence, you end up letting one hand go and afterwards, both hands, when appropriate. What I normally do is I 'take a new grip' of that handle so I can keep going.
Thinking of all these, whilst we are in the midst of discipline, we have to 'get a new grip' and re-strengthen our weak knees for we know that this will help us keep going for the long run.
Discipline is one thing I need in my daily living: in prayer, in reading God's Word, in keeping my body healthy, in my relationships, in my work, in my chores, in every part of life. The lack of discipline really makes one weak - thus I need to constantly re-grip and re-strengthen.
Which area do I really need discipline in? Early prayer and devotions. Working out. Being excellent in my work - motivated and passionate, not selective.
Lord, please help me to be discipline in all areas of my life... To give glory to your name in all things! In Jesus' name. Amen.
